Process

Every Bare Root Natives project is designed as a site-specific ecological system.

Designing with native plants begins with understanding the land itself. Each Bare Root Natives project follows a thoughtful process that evaluates site conditions, ecological opportunities, and long-term landscape performance before design decisions are made.

01 /Observe

Before design begins, the landscape is carefully observed.

  • sunlight patterns

  • existing vegetation

  • soil conditions

  • drainage and hydrology

  • surrounding ecological context

This step helps reveal the natural potential of the site.

Process Framework

02 /Analyze

Once initial observations are gathered, site conditions are analyzed to identify opportunities and constraints.

  • soil structure and composition

  • seasonal sunlight patterns

  • water movement and stormwater flow

  • areas suited for different plant communities

This ecological analysis ensures that plant communities are matched to the conditions where they will thrive.

03 /Design

Plant communities are then designed to create landscapes that function ecologically while remaining visually compelling.

  • seasonal bloom sequences

  • structural grasses and perennials

  • habitat value for pollinators and wildlife

  • long-term landscape resilience

Each design is site-specific, responding to the unique conditions of the existing property.

04 /Implement

Implementation strategies help bring the design to life. Because landscapes evolve over time, many projects are implemented in phases.

  • site preparation strategies

  • planting sequence recommendations

  • installation planning

  • phased landscape transformation

This approach allows landscapes to develop naturally and sustainably.

05 /Steward

Native landscapes continue to evolve as living systems. Stewardship ensures that landscapes remain healthy and resilient over time.

  • seasonal management strategies

  • monitoring plant community development

  • ecological maintenance practices

Over time, these landscapes often become more diverse and resilient.

Philosophy

Long-Term Landscape Thinking

Unlike conventional landscapes that rely on constant intervention, native plant communities evolve and strengthen over time. By designing with ecological processes in mind, Bare Root Natives creates landscapes that mature into thriving ecosystems.

Getting Started

How Projects Begin

Most projects begin with a site consultation and landscape assessment. During this visit we walk the property, discuss goals, and evaluate ecological opportunities for native plant communities.

Consultations typically last 60–90 minutes.

Consultation Fee: $150

If a project moves forward, this fee is credited toward design services.
